5 Minutes with crickett13

crickett13 manages the Pawtucket Bobcats in the AL North. He is one of the Original Eight in Capra--and has been here since the beginning. His team won the World Series in season 9.

1/What If Sports. How long have you been on the site, and how did you end up here? What is your favorite game here? Favorite team or experience on the site?
I got on through the MLB site in 2001 when they first got their MLB license. I always loved tabletop baseball games and baseball history so it was love at first byte. Right now HBD and HD are the only games I still play, but I used to love progressives in SLB. My favorite WIS memories are the original Beer League draft. This was the 1st progressive league on the site so it was kind of an ongoing experiment. Also meeting several owners from that league at a ballgame in Baltimore.

2/Sports. What are your favorite teams in the real world? Favorite players and/or sports memories? What drives you crazy about sports or sports culture?
I'm a huge Phillies fan and have been since I saw my first game in person in 1969. Before that I was almost a Tigers fan because in '68 I first started paying attention to Baseball and rooted for the Tigers in the WS. My favorite memories were that first game. Phils won 1-0, and I can still see Tony Taylor stealing 2B and then flying around 3rd on Deron Johnson's single with 2 outs in the 8th.Also, the final regular season series of the 1980 season vs the Expos and the post season. Hard to beat a 5 game playoff that features 4 extra inning games. And the entire 1993 season.
Also a Colts fan because my dad bought me the Johnny Unitas story when I first started to like sports. He felt Unitas would be a good role model. Also like the Bucs because I lived in Tampa when the franchise first started. The Mike Curtis INT and Jim O'Brien's game winning FG rank as my favorite football moments. Imagine the star O'Brien would be today. A Rookie Kicker wins the Super bowl as time runs out and most fans never heard of him :)
Favorite Players: John Kruk, Dick Allen, Jim Bunning, Johnny U, Marvin Harrison, Chase Utley, Peyton Manning, and Regie Wayne.

3/Music. What are the last three things you listened to? All-time three favorite artists? Best show you've seen?
I asked my daughter how I was going to answer this and she just laughed. My Music tastes are varied. At any given time you can find me listening to Frank Sinatra, Big Band, Elvis (both Presley and Costello) The Talking Heads, Alice Cooper, Velvet Revolver, The Monkeys, The Foo Fighters, Walk the Moon, The Outlaws, Finger Eleven, The Doors, Dylan. Just about anything. Not crazy about rap or classical. I will say this I'm not the guy who bitches there is no good music anymore and pulls the "in my day" crap. We had lots of good and bad music in every era.

4/Aside from sports and music, what are your favorite hobbies, films, books, etc? What might surprise us about your interests?
I love to cook. I went to culinary school when I was younger and worked in restaurants for a while before I realized I loved the work, but not the job. I also like growing vegetables and have a fairly large garden. I write poetry and some of it is even fairly good. I love fantasy books like the Elric Series and the Amber series. Right now I am re-reading Katherine Kurtz's Deryni series. In movies To Kill a Mockingbird, 1776, and the Birdcage are movies I can watch over and over. I am really enjoying all the superhero movies that are coming out right now. I also love the TV shows Gotham and Arrow. Yes I'm a nerd. I would still GM Dungeons and Dragons if I had players.

5/Survival. Where are you from originally, and where are you living now? How do you pay your bills, assuming you do?
I grew up in North East Pa in the Wilkes-Barre Scranton area which some of you may know from the show The Office. Right now I live in Clifton Springs, NY, which is located in the Finger Lakes region. In between I have lived in Tampa, FL, Austin, TX, and Lancaster, PA.
I work for an eyeglass lens company known as Shamir and I travel the country doing educational seminars for Opticians and Eye Doctors, as well as doing installations and troubleshooting of our technology. When I am not on the road I work from home answering questions from Opticians, Eye Doctors, and consumers.

Capra World Buzz Podcast: Season 39

The long-awaited return of the Capra World Buzz Podcast. tbrad321, khendrickson and anthonybenet break down the start of S39.

5 Minutes with evil_twin

evil_twin manages the Montreal Saracens in the AL North. He is on his fourth stint and team with Capra (surely a record for a returning owner!). evil_twin was also an original Capra owner when he founded the San Juan Rumrunners (currently the Nashville Sounds in the NL South).

1/What If Sports. How long have you been on the site, and how did you end up here? What is your favorite game here? Favorite team or experience on the site?
On July 27th 2002, I clicked on an ad on mlb.com looking for something different than typical fantasy sports or games and have been hooked ever since.
My favorite moment on the site would be my first progressive league championship, the 70/71 original Beer League, with a team highlighted by the postseason rotation of Catfish Hunter, Claude Osteen and Don Gullett.

2/Sports. What are your favorite teams in the real world? Favorite players and/or sports memories? What drives you crazy about sports or sports culture?
As a Minnesotan, my favorites are the Twins, Vikings, old North Stars, Wild and Timberwolves.
My favorite sports memories are the 87 World Series, when the team I'd grown up with reached the pinnacle. That's followed closely by the 1991 Series, and the greatest Game 7 ever played.

3/Music. What are the last three things you listened to? All-time three favorite artists? Best show you've seen?

The Black Crowes - Shake Your Money Maker
The Prodigy - Firestarter / Breathe
          Megadeth - Black Friday
Favorite Artists? Howlin' Wolf, Bob Dylan, Black Sabbath
Best Show? June 91, Clash of the Titans - Alice In Chains, Anthrax, Slayer, Megadeth

5 Minutes with flbarons

flbarons runs the Scranton Lackawanna in the NL East and has done so since season 34.

1/What If Sports. How long have you been on the site, and how did you end up here? What is your favorite game here? Favorite team or experience on the site?
I had to look this up – I’ve been on the site since 2004. I found an ad on some sports site and thought I’d give it a try – I started with SIM Baseball and SIM Hockey but quickly decided to just stick with SIM Baseball. I’ve been on HBD for about 3 or 4 years I think – I started in Let’s Play Two with billpitt cause they were recruiting – I must admit I’m not very good at HBD (that won’t surprise anyone LOL) – it takes a lot of time and I travel a ton with my job so I can’t put in as much time as I like but I have been getting some mentoring from guys like mccarthyizm and jeclapton123, which has really helped. I don’t really have a favorite moment on HBD as yet just trying to figure out this game.

2/Sports. What are your favorite teams in the real world? Favorite players and/or sports memories? What drives you crazy about sports or sports culture?
I love all kinds of sports (just about everything to be honest). I grew up a huge hockey (still play today) and baseball guy – I loved the Expos growing up (being a Canuck) and switched to the Jay’s when we lost the 'spos. I have a ton of favorite players from that era Gary Carter, Andre Dawson, Steve Rogers Tim Raines (should definitely be in the HOF), later Dave Steib, Joe Carter, Tony Fernandez – but my all time favorite player is Ken Griffey Jr. I just loved how he played the game. My favorite sports memory was going the Boston/Colorado WS in Denver with my son (that’s him and I in the picture) – it was so much fun and the Colorado crowd was amazing.  Every year he and I go to a major league game somewhere – this year it looks like Detroit to see the Tigers.  I think my biggest problem in today’s sports is how difficult it is for kids to play more than one sport anymore – up here if you’re a decent hockey player that’s all you can play – it’s a 12 month deal – back in the old days J I could play both hockey and baseball – I think it’s sad that kids are missing out on some other sports.

From left: little flbarons, flbarons.
3/Music. What are the last three things you listened to? All-time three favorite artists? Best show you've seen?
I have a 14 year old daughter so I listen to anything “new." It keeps me young . . . so the last 3 songs that were “downloaded for me” were  The Weekend's “The Hills,"  Adele's “Hello,” and Lucas Graham's “7 years.” Cue laughter!! But my 3 favorite artists are Supertramp (my favorite live show), The Fray, and being from Western Canada – Rascal Flats.

4/Aside from sports and music, what are your favorite hobbies, films, books, etc? What might surprise us about your interests?
I really enjoy playing board games with our extended family. I read a ton when I’m traveling, mostly easy reading type stuff – Harlan Coben and Lee Child being 2 of my favorites and even though I work in an office now – I paid my way through college building houses and I still do renovation work for family and friends – it’s great getting a couple of buddies together to build something for somebody and having a beer together after your done.

5/Survival. Where are you from originally, and where are you living now? How do you pay your bills, assuming you do?
Born and raised in Calgary Canada and still living here today. If you’re living in Calgary, you're part of the Canadian oil industry, and I run a small Oil Marketing Company.  I have 3 awesome children although the older 2 are now adultss and by far and away my best work!

5 Minutes with Buzz Capra and/or Crumbly Jones

This response came from an email display name of Buzz Capra and an email address of crumblyjones.

1/What If Sports. How long have you been on the site, and how did you end up here? What is your favorite game here? Favorite team or experience on the site?
First of all, this site is small potatoes, okay? I am bigger than this site, okay? I am worth billions, I could totally buy this site and shut it down, okay?

2/Sports. What are your favorite teams in the real world? Favorite players and/or sports memories? What drives you crazy about sports or sports culture?
I don't have favorite teams, teams have favorite people, like me, okay? I could buy any team I want, if I wanted to-what drives me crazy about sports are people who think small-I think greatness, and do great things-I make things great

3/Music. What are the last three things you listened to? All-time three favorite artists? Best show you've seen?
If I wasn't so busy building my brand into the greatest brand the world has ever seen, I'd have more time for music-I used to listed to the classics when I was child, before I made my first million at 15-Vegas has some very classy shows

4/Aside from sports and music, what are your favorite hobbies, films, books, etc? What might surprise us about your interests?
My hobbies are making money, and being successful. I am not worth millions, I am worth Billions, okay? America's Sheriff, Joe Arpaio, is totally on my side on this

5/Survival. Where are you from originally, and where are you living now? How do you pay your bills, assuming you do?
Is this a trick question? I already answered this-I make billions, and am yuuuugggelly successful, okay? I "don't pay bills," my bills pay me, okay?

5 Minutes with ???, Or, Is This Where I Turn In My Animal Farm Book Report?

These responses came from an email with the address of bertandernieluvpbj@gmail.com. The email address had a display name of Buzz Capra. No reply when I asked for an HBD username.

1/What If Sports. How long have you been on the site, and how did you end up here? What is your favorite game here? Favorite team or experience on the site?
My book report is on Animal Farm, by George Orwell, is a Signet Classic in which animals take over the farm. In the book, animals are used to represent communists and people represent Democrats. I would say that using animals to represent communists was a pretty good idea, because, historically, communists tried to do a lot of animalistic things, like aim nuclear bombs at America, and that is like something an animal on a farm might do.

2/Sports. What are your favorite teams in the real world? Favorite players and/or sports memories? What drives you crazy about sports or sports culture?
Portraying communists as animals who try to run things instead of humans is a good way to make a point. The best scene in the book was probably when some of the various animals on the farm set out to create a paradise of progress, ideals, and equality.

3/Music. What are the last three things you listened to? All-time three favorite artists? Best show you've seen?
Anyone who knows history knows how that really turned out. Not only George Orwell, the author, deserves credit, but Russell Baker for his excellent introduction. Edmund Wilson from The New Yorker sure knew what he was talking about when he said the book was "Absolutely first-rate... on par with Voltaire and Swift."

4/Aside from sports and music, what are your favorite hobbies, films, books, etc? What might surprise us about your interests?
All in all, George Orwell did a great job, and Animal Farm is a Signet Classic in every sense of the word, and well worth the $5.99 purchase price. It's so good, in fact, that if I was in Canada, I would be happy to pay the higher price of $7.99.

5/Survival. Where are you from originally, and where are you living now? How do you pay your bills, assuming you do?

If you liked "Voltaire and Swift," then you will love Animal Farm.

5 Minutes with jlrubbyj57

I received this reply from the following email address: smshanemcgowan@gmail.com, which had the display name of Shane McGowan (any Pogues fans out there?). When I asked for a Capra username, the emailer replied that his Capra name is jlrubbyj57.

1/What If Sports. How long have you been on the site, and how did you end up here? What is your favorite game here? Favorite team or experience on the site?
Barry Bonds and Bud Selig are in a conspiracy together to boost television ratings. Mr. Selig on 2 occasions (Dec.10, 2001 and Feb. 6th, 2003) met Mr. Bonds at the I-70 Steak and Shake, booth #11, made an under the table cream exchange, needles, HGH, as Mr. Bonds provided Mr. Selig 22 thousand for his services. I planted a bug in booth #10, Robert Novak and Judith Miller have copies of the transcripts.

2/Sports. What are your favorite teams in the real world? Favorite players and/or sports memories? What drives you crazy about sports or sports culture?
Barry Bonds is responsible for getting me Federally indicted in Houston, Texas, case #H-30-90, because I threatened to expose his and Bud Selig's steroid/cocaine abuse. Bonds committed identity theft in my name, put a Lendingtree.com mortgage on my credit, burned it down to collect insurance. I had a fraud alert on my social.

3/Music. What are the last three things you listened to? All-time three favorite artists? Best show you've seen?
Barry Bonds on June 22, 2004, bench pressed me against my will to show off in front of his ballpark buddies. I also witnessed Mr. Bonds selling steroids to nuns.

4/Aside from sports and music, what are your favorite hobbies, films, books, etc? What might surprise us about your interests?
Barry Bonds uses Hank Aaron's corked bat during ballgames. The bat has secret chambers where Barry stores his HGH supplements. Bonds takes them while he waits in the batters box. Bonds left a voicemail message on my I-phone, made threats toward me.

5/Survival. Where are you from originally, and where are you living now? How do you pay your bills, assuming you do?
Mr. Bonds gave mustard gas to Saddam Hussein, part of the oil for food scandal. Mr. Bonds is using my copyrighted name for profit.
Plaintiff prays for relief. Asking the Honorable Court to compel Bonds to give me my identity back.
Plaintiff also seeks restraining order. No more baseball games played on the FCI Williamsburg T.V. sets. May peace be with America forever.

5 Minutes with alexkluge

alexkluge manages the Washington D.C. Expos in the AL East. The Expos won the World Series in Season 38, their 13th in Capra.

1/What If Sports. How long have you been on the site, and how did you end up here? What is your favorite game here? Favorite team or experience on the site?
I have been playing Hardball Dynasty for almost 6 years now. I ended up here because of a friend of mine and former Capra owner “mdymond” introduced me to the game. I have only played Hardball Dynasty and have been hooked ever since. Favorite HBD moment was game 6 of the Season 39 World Series when the Expos defeated the Sabres to capture our first World Series title. My second favourite moment was the Season 39 ALDS when the Expos rallied to defeat the Bulldogs after being down 2 games to none to win three straight.

2/Sports. What are your favorite teams in the real world? Favorite players and/or sports memories? What drives you crazy about sports or sports culture?
I am very much a “homer” when it comes to my sports teams. Being from Toronto, I follow the Blue Jays, Raptors, and Maple Leafs all very closely. My top sports moments were Joe Carter’s Game 6 series winning home run of the 1993 World Series, Jose Bautista’s “bat flip” from Game 5 of the 2015 ALDS, and Doug Gilmour’s double over time game winning goal of the 1993 Norris Division finals.

3/Music. What are the last three things you listened to? All-time three favorite artists? Best show you've seen?
I have very eclectic music taste. Recently I have been listening a lot of Mumford & Sons, M83, and Death Cab for Cutie.

4/Aside from sports and music, what are your favorite hobbies, films, books, etc? What might surprise us about your interests?
I love to travel and I love eating. Lucky for me Toronto has a great food scene. When I travel, I like to experience local cuisine and culture.

5/Survival. Where are you from originally, and where are you living now? How do you pay your bills, assuming you do?

I am a Real Estate Broker here in Toronto and lived here most of my life. If any other Capra owners are planning a move to Toronto, I’d love to help them! Lol.

20 March 2016

5 Minutes with moethedog

moethedog has been running the Syracuse Sicilians in the NL East since Capra's 15th season. During this run the Sicilians have won a World Series (26) and battled in the Series five more times.

1/What If Sports. How long have you been on the site, and how did you end up here? What is your favorite game here? Favorite team or experience on the site?
I first came to HBD (and Capra) in Year 15. I had played several seasons, with mixed results, in SimLeague Baseball. I was lucky enough to win a Tournament of Champion in the theme leagues and used that chunk of credit to take the HBD dive. I loved it from Day 1. HBD is the ONLY game I play. I’ve resisted others simply because I have enough of a jones for this one. I was lucky enough to win a Capra World Series a while back. I was also lucky enough to lose 5 WS in 8 seasons, just recently. I have to admit to loving all of it.
2/Sports. What are your favorite teams in the real world? Favorite players and/or sports memories? What drives you crazy about sports or sports culture?
I’m a big Seattle Mariners fan. I’m a graduate of the University of Oregon, Class of ’79, so I’m a pretty large Duck fan, too. Back in the day, when I was attending, the Ducks were terrible in football (anybody remember the Bottom Ten rankings?), or beyond terrible (if you were there, you know what I’m talking about). To really appreciate the recent football success you have to had experienced the dismal years, too. We were pretty decent in b-ball back then (The Kamikaze Kids). I will say that only 8 teams made the tournament WAY back then. Hey, we won an NCAA game tonight! Go Ducks! I’m a big Tom Brady fan and like the Packers, as well. Still remember the Ice Bowl. And it was the Miracle Mets of ’69 that really ignited my baseball love.
3/Music. What are the last three things you listened to? All-time three favorite artists? Best show you've seen?
Probably Sinatra, Mellencamp, and some 1940s jazz (My ring-tone is Louis Prima’s Sing Sing Sing). All-time favs are Buffett (saw him 7-8 times, even before he was famous), Sinatra, and Springsteen . . . maybe. Favorite shows were Buffett, Jerry Jeff Walker, The Moody Blues, Jethro Tull and . . . (yes) Elvis (Winter of ’76).
4/Aside from sports and music, what are your favorite hobbies, films, books, etc? What might surprise us about your interests?
I love movies where people actually talk and there is nuance. Hollywood doesn’t do that anymore. Sigh. I was once a highly competitive scratch-type golfer, but practice too much now and play too little. Mostly now you will find me standing in a river chasing steelhead with a flyrod. In November I try to topple an elk. I read anything and everything (really), especially loving history (which I teach) and Ivan Doig. I recently ended 6 terms as Mayor, have been a Port Commissioner for more than two decades, am directly involved in regional economic development, am a state-wide leader in an alternative energy field, was once named one of Oregon’s 50 Great Leaders, and am finishing my 35th year as a HS teacher. My wife teaches as well. I have a daughter who is a sophomore at the University of Montana. She was an All-State Volleyball player. My youngest daughter, (pictured with yours truly) was All-League in B-ball and Homecoming Queen this year. She’s heading to Oregon State. I’ve been blessed, to say the least.

19 March 2016

5 Minutes with jeclapton123

jeclapton123 manages the San Juan Scorpions in the NL East. He is in his second stint in Capra.

1/What If Sports. How long have you been on the site, and how did you end up here? What is your favorite game here? Favorite team or experience on the site?
I joined HBD because of my best friend, chazzzzzz, who many of you know from the early days of Capra. I was a member of Capra from season 5 through season 14. I took a break from HBD for a while when daily fantasy was first taking off, but I really enjoy HBD and I got the urge one day to check back with Capra and see how things were doing in the league. Much to my surprise, not only was there a slot available in Capra, but it was actually my original franchise that I had acquired back when I first joined!
My favorite game on WIS is definitely HBD. I've tried some of the sim leagues, but they don't compare to HBD for me. I spend most of my time on WIS between two HBD leagues, Capra and Mordecai. I'm wrapping up my third and final season in Fingers.
Favorite team/experience: Although I didn't win a World Series out of it, I did manage to take my team (Iowa City Harvesters) to the World Series in four consecutive seasons. That was a pretty awesome experience.

2/Sports. What are your favorite teams in the real world? Favorite players and/or sports memories? What drives you crazy about sports or sports culture?
I've always been a fan of the Minnesota teams, since I'm born and raised here in the state. I'm a Twins fan and will be going to the home opener in a few weeks, so I'm pretty excited for that experience.
I can list off several players in each of the major sports that are my favorites.

  • NFL- My all time favorites are Barry Sanders and Walter Payton, but my current favorites are Larry Fitzgerald, Russell Wilson, and Von Miller.
  • MLB-I was always a fan of Kirby Puckett as a young Minnesotan, but I also was a die hard Griffey fan as well. He was 2nd only to Puckett for me back in the day. Mike Trout is a player I really enjoy watching in the modern era.
  • I'd have to say that the item that drives me crazy about sports today is ticket prices. WAY too expensive!
  • Favorite memory is the 1991 World Series. The catch by Puckett in game 6 as well as his homer to send the series to game 7 were absolutely unbelievable. Also, the performance by Jack Morris in game 7 was an event that just blew my mind as a 7 year old. It's also the last time our state has seen a world championship from any of the major sports teams, excluding the WNBA. The women's basketball team, the Lynx, is the best team in the state at this moment.
3/Music. What are the last three things you listened to? All-time three favorite artists? Best show you've seen?
Music is something I've always had a passion for in life. I love everything from jazz to metal. My three favorite artists are John Coltrane, Jimi Hendrix, and Gov't Mule. The last three things I listened to are "Anyhow" by Tedeschi Trucks Band, "Another Brick in the Wall" by Brit Floyd(an AMAZING British cover band), and "Thrill is Gone" by BB King.
I can't really pick a favorite show, because I've seen so many great musicians in concert. Live music is something I've always loved, because it allows the musicians to truly open up and share their heart and soul with the listener in the moment. I'll list off some of the acts I've seen in concert. Los Lobos, Los Lonely Boys, Joe Bonamassa, Gov't Mule, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Derek Trucks, Robert Randolph, Bela Fleck, Steve Earle. I will say that I've seen Los Lobos and Derek Trucks more times than any other musician I've listed. I've seen Derek Trucks in his new band or in his original band a combined total of six times.

4/Aside from sports and music, what are your favorite hobbies, films, books, etc? What might surprise us about your interests?
Sports and music comprise a large percentage of my interests. I'm a trivia buff as well, so I'm always someone who can give you the most obscure fact about something you may or may not care about. My favorite film of all time is 12 Angry MenA surprising fact about my interests is that in spite of my screen name referencing a guitar legend, I do not know how to play the guitar.

5/Survival. Where are you from originally, and where are you living now? How do you pay your bills, assuming you do?
I was born in Minnesota. I've lived in Minnesota for my entire life and I don't intend to move out of the state. I've lived in my hometown for approximately 80% of my life (6 years away out of my 31 years of life). I'm working in retail right now selling electronics and answering any and every question about your cell phone, iPad, TV, game console you can think of in this world. However, I do have a college degree in chemistry, but the lab life was too stressful for me, so I'm looking in another direction at this point in time. We'll see where life takes me. :)

18 March 2016

5 Minutes with dcbove

dcbove mans the Cleveland Spiders in the AL East. He has been doing so since season 7 and in this team the Spiders have appeared in the World Series 8 times and won 4 of them.

1/What If Sports. How long have you been on the site, and how did you end up here? What is your favorite game here? Favorite team or experience on the site?
My very first experience on WIS is Season 7 of Capra. I had found the site looking for stats for college football bowl game previews and had followed a link to one of WIS's "Bowl Projection" articles. HBD is the only game I've played (with the exception of one free season of GD).
My favorite experience or accomplishment? Rick Christensen's career Capra lead in pitching wins and winning percentage, if only because of the seasons of sustained success that it required. I'm afraid that Rick won't be all that gracious when Junior Hernandez breaks his record.  Rick thinks he could have squeezed out a few more seasons of 8 to 10 wins if he had too.

2/Sports. What are your favorite teams in the real world? Favorite players and/or sports memories? What drives you crazy about sports or sports culture?

My favorite teams are the Buffalo Bills, the New York Yankees, and Tottenham Spurs.  I figure that liking the hapless Bills and the evil, corporate Yankees provides a certain sort of karmic balance. Spurs have become a favorite to watch on weekend, winter mornings.
My greatest pro sports moment is the 1996 Game 4 World Series homer by Jim Leyritz. I'm just the right age to not remember the late 70s' Yankee World Series wins and have endured the late 80s/early 90s' debacle during high school and college. That homer was the blow that convinced me that my favorite team just might finally win a title!
The greatest sporting event I ever attended was the otherwise meaningless March 8, 1994 ECAC Hockey Preliminary Round Game where Cornell beat Princeton 5-4 in Overtime. Literally(!) the most thrilling event ever. And I can't find an account on the internet other than the final score. I guess you had to be there.

3/Music. What are the last three things you listened to? All-time three favorite artists? Best show you've seen?
My favorite band: seminal Australian psychedelic, space rock band The Church (start here.) Other than that? I still like 80s college rock bands with punk roots like The Replacements and Husker Du, goth roots like The Cure or The Mission or psychedelic roots like The Soft Boys. This millennium really hasn't done much for me.

4/Aside from sports and music, what are your favorite hobbies, films, books, etc? What might surprise us about your interests?
Hobbies? I play golf well enough to find my ball after I hit it. I like to read history, sci-fi/fantasy, and popular science. I'm a software developer and I write more software in my spare time. I just finished watching all 6 seasons of the Clone Wars on Netflix. So, yeah, I guess I like Star Wars.

5/Survival. Where are you from originally, and where are you living now? How do you pay your bills, assuming you do?

I've lived in upstate New York my whole life with only one short-lived stint in Cleveland. Jacobs Field remains my favorite ballpark, far better than either of the Yankee Stadiums. I do manage to pay my bills.

5 Minutes with anthonybenet

anthonybenet is entering his 10th season in Capra. His Los Angeles Vandals play in the AL West.

1/What If Sports. How long have you been on the site, and how did you end up here? What is your favorite game here? Favorite team or experience on the site?
I have been on the site regularly since Season 30 of Capra baseball. I first heard about it when I was in high school and starting playing a couple sim leagues on WIS in 2007. I had a short stint with HBD a handful of years later and now I've found my home here in Capra. Favorite moment with the Vandals so far has been in Game 5 of the Wild Card round of Season 37 against the Peaches. Sammy Beckett's pinch hit home run in the bottom of the 9th sent the game to extras where the Vandals eventually prevailed by an Alexei Bonilla RBI.

2/Sports. What are your favorite teams in the real world? Favorite players and/or sports memories? What drives you crazy about sports or sports culture?

My favorite team is the Cincinnati Bengals. I also enjoy following the Cavs, Reds, and Blue Jackets (pre-2015 version). While these teams have a combined 1 championship in my lifetime (the 1990 Cincinnati Reds when I was a one-year old), I have my Alma Mater to tide me over (Ohio State). By most who know me, sports would be considered my #1 hobby. I religiously watch my sports teams (excluding post-2014 Blue Jackets) and use the "eye-test" to develop theories on the game, then dig into the numbers and metrics to test out my thoughts.

3/Music. What are the last three things you listened to? All-time three favorite artists? Best show you've seen?
Haven't followed music quite the same as I did when I was a teenager. Nowadays I'm happy picking what I like from what is popular at the time. Dance music has seemed to come in strong the last half-decade but I can find something I like from any genre, Rap, Hip Hop, Rock, Classics, and, yes, even Country (sorry teenage version of myself).

4/Aside from sports and music, what are your favorite hobbies, films, books, etc? What might surprise us about your interests?
If a game isn't on in a given night, a movie is going to be playing in my living room. I could talk all day about movies with anyone who has an interest in them. Video games are pretty neat too (Rocket League has consumed up hundreds of hours of my time so far this year). I read a bit as well, normally non-fiction but sometimes fantasy or sci fi.

5/Survival. Where are you from originally, and where are you living now? How do you pay your bills, assuming you do?
Originally from the small town of Piqua, Ohio, near Dayton (the birthplace of flight). Went to college in Columbus, and now I'm working in Cleveland. I worked in pension valuation for a few years, now I'm in commerical insurance pricing. At home, I live with The Wife, a 3-year old Chihuahua mix, a 4-month old St. Bernard / Lab mix, and an 8-month old human.

5 Minutes with erik0097

erik0097 has been running the Toronto Beavers in the NL North since Capra's first season. He is one of the Original Eight.

1/What If Sports. How long have you been on the site, and how did you end up here? What is your favorite game here? Favorite team or experience on the site?
I was part of the wave that came aboard after Simmons mentioned it and one of my co-workers confirmed that yes it would be something I would like. Started with sim baseball, got involved in Hoops Replay, and joined Capra from there. Capra is the only game I am actively playing.
My epic comeback in game 7 of the Capra S04 World Series is of course a great memory. Another one was winning game 6 of the Hoops Replay 1984 Finals -- the feeling of my underdog team pulling one out on the road and sticking around for game 7 made for an exilarating morning/lunchtime. Missing 11 straight shots from the fieldd in game 7 was disappointing, but I loved winning game 6 and going the distance.

2/Sports. What are your favorite teams in the real world? Favorite players and/or sports memories? What drives you crazy about sports or sports culture?
I was born in New Orleans so I have been a lifelong Saints fan. I grew up in Alabama and got absorbed by the Crimson Tide in elementary school. After I moved to Toronto, I was happy to have an MLB team I could jump onto the bandwagon for.
Memories: the Teague Strip; the Porter interception; the Bautista bat flip.
When sports are taken too seriously drives me a little crazy. It's supposed to be fun and enjoyable.

3/Music. What are the last three things you listened to? All-time three favorite artists? Best show you've seen?
New things I've been listening to are Tame Impala, Wye Oak, and the Hamilton soundtrack. My all-time favorites are OutKast, Sleater-Kinney and the White Stripes. My favorite show ever was seeing Sleater-Kinney last year.

4/Aside from sports and music, what are your favorite hobbies, films, books, etc? What might surprise us about your interests?
I read a lot - 50 books last year, a mix of fiction and a broad range of non-fiction; watch TV; hang out with my wife and our cats; occasionally cook - I make some very good soups.

5/Survival. Where are you from originally, and where are you living now? How do you pay your bills, assuming you do?
My Saints-Crimson Tide-Blue Jays fandom traces the path of places I've lived. I have a government job, working on the support staff of a civil tribunal.
I'm on instagram @snoreway if you want to see a goofy mix of drinks, cats, amateurish drawings and landscape photos.

5 Minutes with srunstro

srunstro is in his first season with Capra. His San Diego Aztecs compete in the AL West.

1/What If Sports. How long have you been on the site, and how did you end up here? What is your favorite game here? Favorite team or experience on the site?
I first joined WIS on January 31, 2005 with the username HalfAstros. I discovered the site while browsing for hot-stove league information on MLB.com, during the short period where WIS was affiliated with MLB. I was in my early 30s at that time and “HalfAstros” was the name of my beer-league softball team. When I joined, I thought I was naming a team, not my user id, so I was a little surprised when the name hung around.
My first couple years on the site, I played mostly SimLeague Baseball. I played several hundred “spring training” league seasons, and 20 full seasons, winning 2 world series. I also played around with most of the other SimLeague games, but not seriously.
In 2008, I tried HD during a free promotion, and was quickly hooked. I was part of the group of people who joined the Knight world when it was first created, and raced up the ladder to the powerhouse D1 schools. I created my srunstro id that year so that I could both move up to a higher division, and keep coaching my D3 school at the same time (this is allowed in HD, as long as you follow certain rules). I was actually the first person to reach D1 in Knight, and eventually coached UConn for about 25 seasons.  In total, I’ve played exactly 100 seasons in HD, and won 6 national titles.
I started playing HBD in 2010 when a bunch of guys I knew from HD started the HIGA World. I played 14 seasons in that world, and I think I made the playoffs 11 times. We had a great group of owners in that world, and I became friends with several of them outside the game. We started a trade-deadline chat-group one season, and it became a place a bunch of us hung-out while watching sports or movies even when we weren’t discussing HBD. I really enjoyed that time, but after about 4 years, owners started leaving and the world merged into Maddux. Shortly after that, I took a break from HBD for about 2 years. This season is my first one back in HBD.

2/Sports. What are your favorite teams in the real world? Favorite players and/or sports memories? What drives you crazy about sports or sports culture?
I’m a baseball fan first and foremost. I’ve been a Red Sox fan since I was 5, but what I really love is baseball. I will happily watch majors, minors, high-school ball, and even little league. I’ve coached both my kids’ little-league teams for the past 5 years. I actually really like coaching the T-Ball level. When it comes to enthusiasm, nothing tops a 6 year old who just put a uniform on for the first time.
I grew up in Massachusetts, so I’m a big Boston sports fan. Red Sox, Patriots, Celtics in that order. I was a Red Sox fan long before they were any good, suffering for 30 years of their legendary 86 year drought. Although it’s awfully fun to win, part of me is nostalgic for the pre-2004 era when the fans at Fenway were real fans, not bandwagon fans. I actually don’t mind that they’ve had a couple down seasons, you can get tickets again.

Most memorable sports moments:
1986 ALCS game 5:  David Henderson homers twice to steal victory from the Angels.

1986 WS game 6: Watching the end of the game in the restaurant where I worked. 2 out in the bottom of the 10th, and this guy everyone hated yells: “Everyone stand up for the last out of the WS!” Ouch.

1999-2000 seasons: Pedro Martinez was the best pitcher I ever saw. Arguably the best ever.

2004: 4 games in October. Still gives me chills.

2013: That Red Sox team had no business winning, but they did anyway.

Favorite player: I want to pick some obscure guy and sound more interesting, but, David Ortiz is the man.

3/Music. What are the last three things you listened to? All-time three favorite artists? Best show you've seen?
U2, Jimmy Buffett, and Ellis Paul were the last three things I listened to. Those are probably most frequent on my playlist, but I like a lot of stuff. Best show is hard.  Violent Femmes at the Royal Albert Hall in London was pretty fun. I went to a few Grateful Dead concerts when I was young, which were pretty wild times. Now I’m old and usually just put the music on in my house.
4/Aside from sports and music, what are your favorite hobbies, films, books, etc? What might surprise us about your interests?
I taught both my kids to ski this winter. I hadn’t been in 12 years, but we made a few trips and had fun. Not a good year for snow in the northeast though.
My all time favorite movie is Kicking and Screaming (1995-Noah Baumbach). It captures my youth better than anything I’ve ever seen. I also quite liked the last Star Wars movie.
Over the past year, I’ve read the entire series of Spencer books by Robert Parker. They’re perfect for what they are – good characters, good stories, not too heavy. I’m on the last one now (#40 I think).
In my 20s, I was paid to perform improvisational theatre with a bunch of my friends. We weren’t that good but we had a lot of fun.
I was elected to be a Selectman in my town for 3 years. As a board of 3 people, we ran the town – managing 50 people and a $10 million dollar budget.  We set the budget, negotiated union contracts, hired and fired people, and answered lots of complaints.  It wasn’t really fun but I did learn a lot.
In addition to my day job, I teach at WPI in Worcester. So, technically, I am a professor.

5/Survival. Where are you from originally, and where are you living now? How do you pay your bills, assuming you do?
I was born in Detroit but grew up in central Massachusetts. I currently live just outside Worcester, MA. People hear MA and they think Boston, but I live in a town of only 4,000 people. I know pretty much everyone. There is quite literally a corn field across the street from my house.  The downside is I drive an hour to work each way.
I work as a Technical Writer / Content Architect at The MathWorks, a software company that makes “Technical Computing Software.” It’s software that Engineers use to design things that you use every day, including cars, aircraft, and consumer products. It’s a great company and I’m one of the lucky few who actually likes their job. I’ve been here about 10 years.

5 Minutes with mnnorthstars

mnnorthstars is one of Capra's original eight owners. His Minnesota North Stars team is in the NL North.

1/What If Sports. How long have you been on the site, and how did you end up here? What is your favorite game here? Favorite team or experience on the site?

I signed up in November 2001 when I saw a promotional that the MLB site (I think that was back when mlb.com was still being used by a law firm, remember those days?) ran about the '27 Yankees taking on the '75 Reds and it had a little blurb about the website they used as the engine to run the simulation. That sounded like something really up my alley and I thought that I would give it a try. So I have tried SimLeague baseball and hockey and have done at least a free trial of all the Dynasty games except for racing. My favorite SimLeagues to be in are the ones that have an emphasis on pitching and defense, and the dynasty leagues like the progressive/regressive or the Talent Pool Draft League. That's how I ended up gravitating naturally to this side. I've been exclusively on HBD for a couple of years now, I like that it takes a little bit longer than the sim season and that I can track and shape careers of the players. Winning the S15 Double Mendoza World Series was an interesting experience because I was on a Mediterranean cruise at the time and my dad was running the team. So I was in Greece at a port with free internet access and I checked the site and saw the season was over, I looked at the calendar and saw that I had games played recently, and I looked at the bracket to see that I was the only one left in the playoffs. So I pretty much found out I was a World Series winner through the back door.

2/Sports. What are your favorite teams in the real world? Favorite players and/or sports memories? What drives you crazy about sports or sports culture?

I grew up within sight of the Gateway Arch, so my loyalties lie there. You could literally see the Arch from my subdivision or if you got up on my roof. In baseball my favorites are the Cardinals and Red Sox, with the Twins an emerging third. In hockey I like the Blues and Canadiens, while the Jets are still a fun novelty. Those are the teams I get updates on my phone about. I'm turned off about the NFL's culture, even moreso after they left St. Louis. I got into college football as an alternative in the mid-2000s and I like to root for Missouri and South Carolina. It's kind of cool that they play in Columbia every year no matter who's hosting. As for favorite memories, I've been to two World Series ('11 Game 1 and '13 Game 5) and we were outside the stadium in '06 when they took the lead for good in Game 5. Those are good, and going to Blues playoff games in the '90s and early '00s were a lot of fun.

3/Music. What are the last three things you listened to? All-time three favorite artists? Best show you've seen?

I'm old-timey with my music and I'm only 32. If I'm listening to music I pick, it's probably some rock from last decade or some singer-songwriter stuff.

4/Aside from sports and music, what are your favorite hobbies, films, books, etc? What might surprise us about your interests?

I've got a large collection of Axis and Allies games, particularly the miniatures games. For Axis and Allies: War at Sea I'm part of a forum that has been keeping the game alive through new card projects since Wizards of the Coast dumped the designer in 2011. It's rumored they canceled the 7th set in favor of making the movie Battleship, so I'm sore about that. I'm an amateur historian and enjoy Napoleonic Era naval stuff, and World War II. My wife and I also enjoy traveling tremendously.

5/Survival. Where are you from originally, and where are you living now? How do you pay your bills, assuming you do?

I'm still in the St. Louis area on the Illinois side. I teach high school Spanish, World History, and Recent US History about an hour away from home.

5 Minute with vikesxv

vikesxv has managed the Kansas City Exodusters in the NL West since Capra's second season.

1/What If Sports. How long have you been on the site, and how did you end up here? What is your favorite game here? Favorite team or experience on the site?
My son, mnnorthstars, invited me to play SimLeague Baseball years ago. I had one team win over 110 games. We played that for awhile and moved to Dynasty because this is more challenging.

2/Sports. What are your favorite teams in the real world? Favorite players and/or sports memories? What drives you crazy about sports or sports culture?
I am from St. Louis and grew up in Minnesota. My favorite teams are the Minnesota Vikings, St. Louis Cardinals and Blues hockey. Players Rod Carew & Alan Page, Gump Worsley from the past. I met Lou Brock 19 years ago. I very much respect Tony Dungy and Walter Payton. The best sports events are March Madness and Wild Card weekend NFL.

3/Music. What are the last three things you listened to? All-time three favorite artists? Best show you've seen?
My roots are classic rock, Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Who and Pink Floyd. I have mellowed with age and now appreciate smooth jazz, Peter White Bony James also R&B Sade. I have seen Led Zeppelin and Peter Frampton twice. The most memorable was my first concert, Loggins & Messina. Jeff Beck was excellent.

4/Aside from sports and music, what are your favorite hobbies, films, books, etc? What might surprise us about your interests?
Louis Zamporini is a great story. Favorite author is Patricia Cornwell. Favorite book is the Bible. Favorite movie is Master & Commander. My interests are eclectic but I am conservative and boring.

5/Survival. Where are you from originally, and where are you living now? How do you pay your bills, assuming you do?
I am a school business manager in North central Indiana.
